While it's the source of life, water is the enemy of a homeowner facing plumbing problems. Next to a natural disaster, the one thing that can ruin your home is a major plumbing issue. The good news is there are steps that every homeowner can take to stop plumbing nightmares from coming to life, and for fixing them before they get out of control.
If your pipes bang when you turn on the water, and all the pipes are anchored correctly, you should add some straps or cushion the pipes with a rubber blanket. There may be times when you will need to do both. Make sure that if you have copper pipes, you are not using galvanized straps.
Get to know the tools and how they are used for the most success in plumbing. Read every manual, and use the Internet and library to research the projects that you plan on doing. Don't just blindly rush into a project. Plan each project so that you don't make costly mistakes.
If you find you are having an issue with the garbage disposal, do not put your bare hands in the disposal. Even if the disposal is turned off, it can still be hazardous. Locate a diagram of the garbage disposal, or some sort of troubleshooter, online.
Always use cold water when your garbage disposal is running. Cold water keeps blades sharp and allows for smoother disposal. When you use hot water, any grease that is in the garbage will melt and be more prone to stopping up your drain.

You can purchase self-adhesive drip tape from your local hardware store. This drip tape will insulate your \sweating\ pipes which are dripping with moisture built up from condensation. To make sure the tape sticks firmly, dry the pipe thoroughly before applying the tape.
In cold climate areas, sometimes the pipes in the plumbing system freeze. You can thaw them out without calling a plumber. Before beginning this process, open the faucet and begin thawing closest to the faucet and then move down the line as sections thaw out. One method you can use is to wrap the pipe with a heavy towel or burlap and then pour hot water over it, set a bucket underneath to catch the water.
